LIAM TAMNE

    ABOUT

“I WANT TO BE AN ACTRESS TOO.”

You might be wondering why I started with those words, so let me explain.
When I was ten, my Year 5 teacher asked our class what we wanted to be when we grew up. My friend Michelle proudly said, “I want to be an actress.” In my head, that meant someone who got to show off in front of people, so I quickly added, “I want to be an actress too.” My teacher laughed and told me, “Boys can’t be actresses.”

Well… those who know me know that can’t has never been in my vocabulary. I was a kid who didn’t follow rules, I made my own. I didn’t understand the difference between an actor and an actress back then, but that moment was the first time I remember thinking about performing as a living.

I’ve always loved to sing. My mum likes to joke that I came out of the womb singing, crying on pitch. Both my parents were huge music lovers, and their taste shaped me. I grew up surrounded by Soul, R&B, Pop, Jazz, Rock and Blues. Artists like Alexander O’Neal, Babyface, Luther Vandross, Prince, and Michael Jackson filled our house, but my biggest inspiration was Whitney Houston. I used to perform the entire Bodyguard soundtrack to anyone who’d listen: my family, the neighbours, even the dogs.

The greatest gift my family gave me was the freedom to dream. There were no limits. My dad, who’s African Indian, and my mum, who’s Irish, both faced their own struggles growing up, but they never let those challenges define them, or us. They taught my brothers and me that anything was possible.

I grew up in Coventry, where creative opportunities were pretty limited. My first “performances” were secret recreations of 90s MTV Select videos, performed for my family or the dogs. When my parents realised I was serious, they encouraged me completely. I joined a youth operatic group called The Bare Essentials, and the wonderful Allesley School of Dance. My teachers there were amazing, they believed in me from the very start. With their support and a lot of hard work, I earned a place at Laine Theatre Arts in Epsom.

Laine was tough, but those years changed my life. I worked harder than ever to make that little mixed-heritage boy’s dream come true. Growing up as part of the global majority wasn’t without its challenges, but those experiences became my fuel. They taught me resilience and pride in who I am.

Since then, I’ve been lucky enough to perform all over the world, especially in London and the U.S. on stage and screen. I love being an actor who sings, but more than anything, I love storytelling. I was told many times that I’d never make a living performing, or that “people like you can’t be famous.” But I never wanted fame, I’ve always wanted to create meaningful work, build memories, and hopefully make a difference.

Looking back, I’m grateful for every challenge and every tear. Being an openly gay, mixed-heritage actor has been a blessing, even though as a kid, I sometimes thought it was a curse. My identity gives me purpose. I’ll always write songs, create stories, and stand with my Black and brown brothers and sisters, the LGBTQ+ community, and women everywhere.

Strong women have shaped my journey, my aunties, my Nan Sheila, Denise Timms who introduced me to dance, Lizzie Pierce, Alison Dougall, and June Pughe at Allesley, Betty Laine at Laine Theatre Arts, and so many more. And finally, my amazing husband Mike, and our two gorgeous bulldogs, Daphne and Godfrey, you are my heart.

    Here’s to the next chapter.

    REVIEWS

    The Rocky Horror Show

“The production is incredibly well-cast- the standout performance by far was by the Sweet Transvestite Frank-N-Furter, played by Liam Tamme. This role can easily make or break the show, so not an easy one to take on, but Tamne plays it charismatically and the audience evidently show their love for him. Always edging on the inappropriate in his Dracula-esque cloak and actions, Tamme dominates the stage and successfully allows the audience to play along with his plan.”

    The Light In the Piazza

In ‘American Dancing’ Liam Tamne as his brother Giuseppe and Alex Jennings as their father Signor Naccerelli, provide a light, humorous interlude.

    Working the musical

“Tamne’s fun energy onstage added to the plethora of talent on display in Working, his performances as takeout delivery driver Freddy Rodriquez and caregiver Utkarsh Trujillo were affecting highlights. Flashing the audience his cheeky grin, Tamne’s characterisation and vocal performance flawless throughout.”
